Fresh Off the Boat – Season 3, Ep 14 – Home American Simplicity Floral and Threshold Wellsbridge Aqua

Fresh Off the Boat  | Season 3, Episode 14 - The Gloves Are Off

This post is going to be a two-in-one, since both of these patterns have already been extensively discussed on this site.

In this episode, Jessica tries to solve Honey’s problems with Martin’s first wife, Sarah. However, Honey was just looking to vent. ‘Venting’ is a term that Jessica failed to understand. And Jessica, being the no-nonsense problem solver that she is, gets Sarah fired. In the end, Jessica gets Sarah re-hired, and learns a few new words – vent, closure, and……Clinque!

During the final scene, Jessica and Honey are talking in Honey’s kitchen. They are using Home American Simplicity Floral Mugs, and Threshold Wellsbridge Aqua mugs can be seen in the mug tree on the counter. What is interesting is that the show is set in the late 1990s; while American Simplicity Floral and Wellsbridge Aqua were first released in 2008 and 2013, respectively.

It seems very odd to choose two obviously modern patterns, that can be picked up at Target, for a period show. There are many widely available dish patterns still in production today that were created in the 1990s, and have a much more 90s vibe.

Several patterns come to mind including Mikasa’s Garden Harvest, Pfaltzgraff’s Naturewood, and Dansk’s Mesa. However, Denby’s Harlequin is the PERFECT 1990s pattern, using the three most popular colors of the 90s – hunter green, navy blue, and maroon. We can also give a shout out to Corelle’s Abundance pattern which was released in 1990 and also features those classic 90s colors.
