For the Food Network’s show, White House Thanksgiving, Trisha Yearwood is invited to prepare Thanksgiving dinner (and dessert!) with First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and Executive Pastry Chef, Susan Morrison.
One of the recipes featured in the episode is an apple crisp, served with the President’s favorite ice cream – chocolate chip. As Trisha Yearwood says, “the only thing more American than apple pie, is Presidential approved apple crisp.”
This recipe uses the “secret ingredient” of White House honey in both the apple filling and crumble topping. You can bake the crisp a little less for an al dente crisp. Or leave it in the oven a bit longer for those browner bits.
The crisp is baked in a very traditional baking dish – Pfaltzgraff Heritage White. The Pfaltzgraff family immigrated to the United States in the early 1800s and established their pottery in York, Pennsylvania. This may be another nod to President Biden’s family heritage – this time, his link to his childhood in Pennsylvania.
Try the recipe out for yourself.
