March 17th, a day many Americans know as the day to drink copious amounts of beer and receive a pinching if we don’t wear green. The day Americans who don’t have a drop of Irish blood wear shirts that state, “Kiss Me I’m Irish!”
However many are unaware as to why we actually celebrate St. Patrick’s Day as much as we do, therefore I leave it to history to explain!
March 17th was declared the Roman Catholic feast day for Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, to celebrate his life and mission. However, this festive day happens to also fall during Lent. Due to the desire for celebration all Lent prohibitions were put on pause in order for the Irish to properly raise a glass, dance, and “…feast-on the traditional meal of Irish bacon and cabbage”, states history.com. This St. Patrick’s Day tradition carried over with the Irish immigrants when they arrived in the United States, thus the organic spread of St. Patrick’s Day festivities began!
Not Irish? No problem. The spirit of St. Patrick’s Day transverses all cultures and ethnicities, hence the reason it has become so popular.
