President Dalton explains that he wants Elizabeth for Secretary of State because he was the one to recruit her into the CIA, he knows how she thinks, and he trusts her. Then President Dalton excuses his security detail, stands, and goes in for the hard sell to convince Elizabeth to take the job as Secretary of State. He reveals that he wanted to nominate Elizabeth from day 1 yet he was talked out of it by “well meaning advisors”.  Vincent Marsh was not his first choice – he was always running for office. Elizabeth quit the CIA for ethical reasons – making her “the least political person he knows”.
